The UST Main Building, Central Seminary, Arch of the Centuries and the UST Grounds have been declared National Cultural Treasures by the National Museum. This is the first time for an educational institution in the Philippines to be part of the list.

Being the oldest university in the country, UST has always been part of Philippine history. The Main Building, established 1927, was used by the Japanese army as an internment camp during the World War II. The Central Seminary was providing Ecclesiastical studies to priests since 1611. The Arch of the Centuries was the original entrance to the university when it was still in Intramuros. The UST grounds is where the traditional freshmen welcome walk, Paskuhan and other activities were held.

(for more info click here)

No to Charter Change

Posted by klomster | 7:28 PM | , , | 0 comments »

Several attempts to introduce Charter change have been undertaken in the past. At present, the debate on Cha-cha was revived again. The present administration is proposing to revise the 1987 Constitution to make way for the Federal- Parliamentary system. All their efforts however were faced with protests by Corporates, Church leaders and individuals due to suspicions on their motives. The President is questioned on her interests on having term-extension because there is a possibility for her to be the Prime Minister if ever Charter change is approved. Though President Arroyo’s allies continue to defend her, legislators must not pursue Cha-cha because it does not guarantee economic development and it is just a waste of time.

Here comes tropical storm "Pepeng".
Here comes Christmas!

Manong Pepeng
The country is still in the process of recovering from "Ondoy" but the headlines deliver another sad news, another typhoon named "Pepeng". Seeing the aftermath of Ondoy alarmed me and made me realize that we have to do something to prevent this from happening again. According to the weather forecast, Pepeng may not give heavy rains as much as Ondoy but it will bring strong winds that could cause another damage to Luzon.

Typhoon 'Ondoy'

September 26, 2009, 10:00 am- Classes were suspended in UST due to "Unending Grace".

The University of Santo Tomas is known to be the oldest University in Asia. Founded 1611, it will celebrate its quadricentennial year on 2011. Besides its 400 years of excellence in different academic fields such as Medicine and Engineering, UST has been popular for being an instant swimming pool during rainy days. The nonstop heavy downpour of rain caused by the typhoon "Ondoy" made the whole Metro Manila submerge in flood.

I was about to get my uniform when I received a text message saying the classes are suspended. Though I live only a few blocks from UST, I decided not to take the risk of getting wet just to confirm if we really have classes or not. It was about 10 in the morning when classes were officially suspended. Flood was already surrounding UST that time yet some of my classmates were still inside.
